About Me

Hi! I’m Marcus Metadae, and I specialize in character portraits and visual progression of narrative. My current artworks are focused around the Pathologic games by Ice Pick Lodge, but I have been drawing original characters and stories since I was very young. I am an almost entirely self-taught digital artist, and though my personal expertise has carried me far I still hope to go to art school sometime soon to strengthen my skills.

My biggest inspirations are Molly Brown, Trevor Henderson, Meethos, and MeiriMerens.

Equipment

My drawing tablet is a Huion KAMVAS Pro 12 GT-116, though I would not recommend this tablet if you’re looking for long-lasting quality. I’ve had this thing for most of my “career”, but the cords wear down fast and are expensive to replace. Additionally, their customer service is not quite up to par. But hey, I still own it and it still works.

I use Paint Tool Sai (ver. 2) for almost everything I do. It’s a little hard to grasp some of its more specific functions but it pretty much has everything I’ll ever need (except for a non-smudging liquify tool).

Favorite Sai Brush Settings

Sketch brush:

  • Pencil (Hardest)
  • Size: 10-25 (Min 63%)
  • Density: 75 (Min 26%)
  • Brush form: Acrylic, Mess. 16

A good rough brush for drafting and scribbling. Sometimes I use it for textured highlights, but rarely.

Line Art Brush:

  • Pencil (Hard)
  • Size: 6 (Min 74%)
  • Density: 100 (min 78%)
  • Brush form: Acrylic, Mess. 16

I normally use a basic pencil for line art, then color over it with my misc. brush. These settings are for the lineart style I use in comics. Fun to use, and also good for drawing stubble or hair. Easy to clean with the eraser tool, but i’ve found that scribbling with it instead of using clean lineart can be very effective for certain vibes.

Base colors brush:

  • Effect Pen (Hardest)
  • Size: Varies (Min 0%)
  • Density: 100 (Min 100%)

Very simple and effective tool for throwing colors at the wall and seeing what sticks. I use this to color everything I’m not too lazy to fill-tool.

Shading/Misc Rendering brush:

  • Brush
  • Size: Varies (Min 58%)
  • Density: 50-70 (Min 42%)
  • Brush shape: Fine Flat, Hair 100 (hair min 49%, randomize 0%, direction auto, detect turn)
  • Texture: Paper, Intens. 20 (Scale 162% Invert for Transparency)
  • Blending: 13 (applied pen pressure)
  • Dilution: 3 (applied pen pressure
  • Persistence: 15 (keep opacity)
  • Blur pressure: 17%

This thing is so fun to use. I use this brush for everything if I’m given the chance, though mostly it’s for shading and coloring on top of line art once it’s time for finishing touches. Good capabilities for texture if you know how to use it, and the blending is mwah.
